How merchants expanding to new customer groups, such as business buyers, overseas customers or rural shoppers, can choose payment methods that fit those customers.

The short answer

When you sell to a new customer group, do not assume your existing payment methods will work for them. Find out how that group already pays, what amounts are typical, what documents or receipts they need, and which provider can support those methods under your agreement. Then add the minimum set of methods that covers most of them.

Ask how they already pay

Talk to a few customers from the new segment, look at how competitors serving them take payment, and ask your sales team. Questions to ask:

  • Which method do you usually use for this kind of purchase?
  • Do you need an invoice or receipt for your company?
  • Is there an amount above which you would prefer a different method?

Examples of segment differences

Business buyers

Often pay by bank transfer against invoices with payment terms, and need receipts with company details. See B2B invoice payments.

Overseas customers

May expect cards or international methods and see prices in their own currency. Cross-border collection involves different provider rules, fees and settlement. Read cross-border payments in South Asia.

New regions within the country

May rely more on mobile wallets or cash on delivery. Delivery coverage and refusal rates may differ.

Younger or first-time online buyers

May prefer wallets they already use for everyday payments and value clear instructions.

Check provider fit

For each method you want to add, confirm with the provider: availability for your business type, fees, limits, settlement timing and refund handling. Availability and terms are decided by the provider.

Add gradually

Add one method, test it with the new segment, then decide whether to expand. Too many methods at once make support and reconciliation harder.

Measure

Track success rate, average order value and refund rate per method within the new segment.

Scenario

A stationery wholesaler begins selling to schools. Schools want invoices and bank transfers rather than wallet payments at checkout. The wholesaler adds invoice-based ordering with bank transfer references while keeping wallet checkout for individual teachers.

Support and reconciliation for new methods

Every new method adds work for support and finance. Before launch, write how support will check a payment for that method, how refunds work and how the method appears in settlement reports. Brief the team with examples. Methods that customers like but staff cannot support quickly often create more complaints than they solve.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove methods existing customers use?

No. Add for the new segment without disrupting current customers.

How do I know which methods my provider offers?

Ask for its current method list and terms in writing.
