How merchants can prepare support coverage, payment monitoring and cash flow for weekends and public holidays when settlement and bank operations may slow down.

The short answer

Sales can run during weekends and holidays while banks, settlement and some provider support may slow down. Plan three things in advance: who answers customers and monitors payments during the break, how much cash you need until settlements resume, and which refunds or payouts may be delayed. Check your provider's published schedule rather than assuming.

Why holidays are different

Customers keep shopping, but bank processing and settlement often follow business days. Money collected on a holiday may reach your account later than usual. Provider support may run with smaller teams.

Support coverage

  • Make a rota for each day, with a named person checking payment status and messages.
  • Publish response times honestly, for example "Replies within a few hours during the holiday".
  • Prepare templates for common questions: payment pending, delivery dates, refunds.

Payment monitoring

Assign someone to check that payments are arriving and that orders are being confirmed. A failed webhook or provider issue on a holiday can go unnoticed for days. Know how to contact your provider's support outside business hours.

Cash flow planning

  1. Check your provider's settlement schedule and holiday calendar.
  2. Estimate sales during the break.
  3. Estimate costs you must pay before settlements arrive: staff, suppliers, couriers.
  4. Keep enough cash or credit to cover the gap.

Refunds and payouts

Refunds requested during holidays may take longer. Tell customers: "Refunds requested during the holiday will be processed from [date]." Do not promise faster than you can deliver.

Delivery

Couriers may close or run reduced services. Show realistic delivery dates at checkout.

Scenario

A clothing store runs a big Eid promotion. Last year, settlements arrived several days after the holiday and the store struggled to pay its courier. This year, it checks the settlement calendar, arranges a short credit line and staggers supplier payments. Operations run smoothly.

After the holiday

When normal operations resume, check that all settlements for the holiday period arrived and match your sales, and clear the backlog of support messages, refunds and deliveries in order of age. Note what went well and what to change for the next holiday, such as rota size, message templates or cash buffer.

Communicating with customers

Put holiday notices on your website, social pages and order confirmation messages. Say clearly when support will respond, when deliveries will resume and when refunds will be processed. Customers are generally patient when told in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Should I pause sales during long holidays?

Not necessarily. Many merchants keep selling with adjusted delivery dates.

What if the provider has an outage on a holiday?

Have a backup method and a message ready. See payment uptime and failover.
